Rules of Engagement Rings
There’s no reason to settle for an ugly engagement ring. You’ll have to wear it every single day for the rest of your life, so it’s worth putting in the time to ensure you get a ring you adore. Envious of the sparklers weighing down Kate Middleton, Jessica Simpson or Jennifer Aniston? Rebecca Lowe, from diamond jewellery specialists Samara James, has some handy hints to help you get exactly the ring you want…
How Can I Get My Boyfriend to Buy the Type of Engagement Ring I Want?
You’ve been dating for years and maybe you’ve even talked about getting married. You know that the big question is just around the corner – but how can you get your loving boyfriend to buy you the kind of ring you want? After all, you’ve got style and the last thing you want is to wear an ugly or clashing ring. If you’ve got your heart set on a certain ring, here are a few ways you can push your guy towards purchasing your dream ring:
The Childhood Memories Game: Slide into letting your boy know which ring you’d like by telling an anecdote. Start like this: “When I was a kid, I always wanted a heart-shaped ring with a big emerald in the middle.” Then say something like, “Oh, but wouldn’t that be awful? These days, I’d much rather wear a simple gold ring with a diamond.” If you’re slick, you can pull this off without him ever knowing you were hinting. When he goes to buy a ring, he’ll remember what you want though.
A Friend of a Friend: Wondering how you can drop a more obvious hint without him catching on? Talk about your “friend” and her engagement ring horror story. He doesn’t have to know that you totally made up the story about your friend Cindy and her horrible boyfriend who bought her a gold ring when she clearly wanted silver. Depending on how subtle you want to be, you could even mention specific stones or cuts and tell your boyfriend how much you love or hate them.
Talk About Your Style: Want to get a little more obvious? Wear an outfit that’s the same style as the ring you want, whether it’s understated, flashy or colourful. Ask your boy what he thinks about your outfit, then tell him all the things you like about it. Say things like, “Oh yes, my style is totally sleek and sophisticated. I really like things that are versatile and match everything,” or “I really love things that are totally over-the-top.” Hopefully your boyfriend is good at taking a hint!
Celeb Comparisons: One way to get the message across is to tell him about celebrity rings that you love. Do you love Kate Middleton’s or Jennifer Aniston’s ring? Drop it into conversation casually and tell him what you love about their gorgeous rings. That way, he can look it up and buy something similar for you! If you want to be a little more obvious, look at celebrity rings with him and tell him which ones you like and why.
Just Tell Him! If you have a strong style preference or really want a particular type of ring, there’s nothing wrong with just telling him. If he’s not picking up on all the hints you’re dropping, then let him know what kinds of things you like so he can get you something you’ll love.
