A Romantic Weekend With TSL

Hooray! The weekend is here and Pascale from Twenty Something London is back with 5 more top recommendations that will take you from post-work drinks right through to a relaxing Sunday afternoon tea – and beyond. Valentine’s Day may have been and gone, but that doesn’t mean you can’t extend the festivities over the weekend to spend some time holed up in these hideouts with the one you love…

FOR A QUICK BITE ON A FRIDAY NIGHT: Karpo, Kings Cross

When I find myself in Kings Cross, Karpo – a cafe, restaurant and bar just opposite the station – is the where I always head to. The interior is sleek, open plan and modern and the daily spread of cakes, croissants and sandwiches are very yummy. What’s even better is the friendly staff, free WiFi for those that need it and the novelty of walking into a huge building sprayed entirely in colourful graffiti!

FOR SOPHISICATED DRINKS: Purl Bar, Marylebone

For times when you want to play catch-up with friends or find a suitable setting for an intimate date, Purl makes the list. Not only are the cocktails meticulously put together with attentive care but the layout of this underground speakeasy, with all is various alcoves and hidden corners, makes for a great atmosphere.

FOR HOMEMADE FOOD: Mama Lan’s Restaurant, Brixton

When you want an authentic Chinese meal in a lively setting and don’t want it to cost the earth, Mama Lan’s in Brixton Village is a top recommendation. The beef noodle soup is superb with generous pieces of meat cooked until perfectly tender – and let’s not forget the homemade dumplings. Considering everything is under a tenner, you’ll definitely want to come back for more.

FOR A RELAXING AFTERNOON: Fulham Palace, Putney

Now for a London retreat. This former country home of the bishops of London dates back to 704AD and is the perfect hideaway. My favourite is the open-plan tea-room/cafe where you can get very reasonably prices lunches and profit from the most wonderful views over-looking the perfectly manicured gardens. What’s even better is that entry to the palace is free!

FOR A SUNDAY NIGHT OUT: The Haggerston, Pub & Live Jazz, Dalston

Where is the place to go for a fun night out on a Sunday? The Haggerston – an independent pub in Dalston – is a firm favourite thanks to the fantastic jazz which gets the place packed till the early hours. Having had previous experience of the queues when it comes to late arrivals, I always try heading there for around 11pm.
