Shoe Shopping with Tracey Neuls

Named as one of London’s Best Shops by Time Out, when it comes to shoe shopping you simply can’t keep the SG girls away from Tracey Neuls. Since launching her own label back in 2000, Cordwainers-trained Tracey has proven that you most definitely can combine comfort and style. Eschewing the trend for painful ‘designer’ shoes, Tracey Neuls footwear fits like a glove with every pair handcrafted from the finest quality leather. What’s more, the distinctive, sculpted shoes have just earned Tracey a nomination for Footwear Designer of the Year from Drapers. Let’s find out more…

So Tracey, how would you describe the style of Tracey Neuls footwear in just 3 words?

Individual, Timeless and Comfortable.

What can we expect for S/S 13?

Perforated leather and bold colours such as patent phosphorus, grass and a  colour we call ‘Delicious’.

Which is your favourite piece from the collection?

The collection is inspired by Saturday Night Fever, so the little, flat lace up which is called ‘Travo’ is a must – especially in faux snake skin!
L-R: ALI in patent phosphorus, DENIS in navy mesh, LIPY loafers with perforated upper, TRAVO in faux snake skin

What inspires you?

Day to day things. There is inspiration everywhere and it feels like the little things in life need a bit of celebration more than the fantastical in this world.

Who is your ultimate style icon?

Rei Kawakubo for Comme Des Garcons is amazing. She has managed throughout many years to push the boundaries of design, remain timeless and essentially design what she wants even if it is not what fashion dictates.

What was the last thing you bought in the sales?

A pair of cords that I thought might not be as lovely as they are – can one wear them too often?

What will you be shopping for this spring/summer?

I’m looking for a good pair of dark denims which I can layer under a timeless dress. Shoes are sorted!

Favourite shop…

Retrouvius – an architectural salvage space which has so many wonderful finds and surprises around every corner. Formulaic shopping is not my bag.

You’d splurge on…

A timeless piece of anything that you’ll love more each day you wear it.

You’d search the sales for…

A special colour in anything that you might not want as an everyday item, but would be wonderful to have when the occasion arises.

You’d avoid…

Trendy items.

What’s your No. 1 shopping tip?

Go with your heart. Your purchases are way more fulfilling and long lasting if it is something that you have an emotional attachment to. First impressions are often the best.

Thanks Tracey! Good luck at the Drapers Awards.

If our chat has tempted you to head out shoe shopping, you’ll find Tracey Neuls stores on Marylebone High Street and Redchurch Street in London – or alternatively you can shop online.
