Cannes style – Time to dust off the little white dress

As the stars stepped out into the bright sunshine of Cannes it seemed like they’d all had the same idea… time to dust off the little white dress. Displayed to best effect against lightly tanned skin, the LWD remains a firm summer holiday favourite whether you take inspiration from Isla Fisher and Lana Del Rey and go for girly lace, or you opt for a simple sports luxe skater dress a la Emma Watson.

Lana Del Rey

In a case of life imitating art, the big news from this year’s Cannes Film Festival has been the theft of Chopard jewellery worth over $1m – ironically only a few hours after the screening of The Bling Ring; Emma Watson’s new flick about a gang of teenagers who break into the homes of the rich and famous to steal their designer clothes and jewellery. However, these low key looks just go to show that these ladies don’t need diamonds to shine.

If you’ve got a slight feeling of dress déjà vu, we have seen Audrey Tautou’s floral Valentino number before. Alexa Chung wore it to the Grammy Awards back in February, but no-one could evoke the gamine beauty of Audrey Hepburn quite like Tautou in this 50s style floral dress.

That said it’s Lana Del Rey’s casual look that’s grabbed our attention. Wearing her little white lace dress with an on trend bomber jacket, embroidered velvet slippers and, of course, a Mulberry Del Rey handbag it is in fact an easy look to recreate on the high street. Plus, lose the jacket and swap the flats for some peep-toe platforms and voila – you’ve got Isla Fisher’s evening look!

Punk Princesses Rock the Met Ball

From leather and lace to studs, spikes and safety pins – we just can’t get enough of the punk inspired looks showcased at this year’s Met Ball.

For almost 40 years the London v New York punk debate has raged on, but now it looks like we’re set to see a resurgence of subversive punk anti-fashion straight out of NYC following the annual Costume Institute Gala.

You couldn’t get an event closer to the centre of the fashion establishment, so all eyes were firmly fixed on the Big Apple to see how the world’s most stylish celebs would handle the ‘punk chaos’ theme of this year’s Met Ball. Cue Sid Vicious safety pins and Siouxsie Sioux bondage gear

PUNK PRINCESSES

We may have failed miserably to spot any multi-coloured Mohawks on the red carpet, but both Miley Cyrus and Anne Hathaway took the opportunity to show off their new bleached blonde cropped hair dos, whilst Sarah Jessica Parker just stopped just short of going for the chop, instead opting for a Philip Treacy ‘Faux Hawk’.

As a theme, punk played perfectly into Madonna’s hands. All she needed do was rummage through her 80s wardrobe of ripped jeans and lace bodystockings then pile on the crucifix jewellery. For others a smokey eye was by far enough of a nod to the theme.

Studded Burberry can be hailed the success of the evening – as seen on Sienna Miller and Cara Delevingne – but this is punk glammed up for the A-List. No green Mohawks, Dr Martens or old Sex Pistols t-shirts here! The Met Ball is a polite society affair rather than a display of anti-establishment anarchy after all. Rumour has it that Anna Wintour put her foot down to veto a naked sculpture of Vivienne Westwood as the centrepiece of the event. So is this it? Has Punk finally gone mainstream?

Perspex bag set to be our bag of choice

If anything can beat the back to work blues after a sunny Bank Holiday, it’s a new handbag! This season it’s clear to see that the Perspex box clutch is set to be our bag of choice – but does that mean the secrets of a woman’s handbag are soon to be revealed to the world and his wife?

Perspex Clutches

Transparent bags may look great on the catwalk – when they are empty or filled with pretty things you want to show off – but in the real world do we really want our purse, phone, keys, screwed up tissues and old receipts on display? The must-have Charlotte Olympia Pandora box clutch even comes with a selection of 3 inserts – so you can tell yourself you’re really getting 3 bags for the price of one! If a clutch is just too small for all your essentials, you can always shop for a Perspex shoulder bag or satchel. Take your pick there are quirky and stylish options out there for every budget

Double Denim & Dungarees Are Back

Can our love affair with skinny jeans really be at an end? Denim is going back to its roots and dungarees are coming back with a vengeance! For too long they have been the preserve of toddlers and painter decorators, but this season denim dungarees are set to take over from the onesie as the all-in-one of choice.

Levi's Lookbook

It’s time to roll up your jeans and get down to work on a look that screams vintage Americana. In the days before double denim became a fashion statement, the revolutionarily durable fabric was a workwear staple down on the farm. That said, if the whole land girl/farm boy look is just too much you could always try out a pair of ‘Mum’ jeans.

This season’s other big denim trend, (so called because they’re the style you or your mum wore back in the day) ‘Mum’ jeans are high-waisted and loose fitting with a tapered leg. Super skinnies they definitely ain’t, but you’ll soon love them every little bit as much. A similar style is also big news for boys at the moment – but maybe think more James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause than mum on the school run!

If your dare to double your denim – and up the retro factor – throw on an oversized denim jacket too. Where Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears infamously went wrong at the 2001American Music Awards was to attempt to make denim formal. Co-ordinating a denim three-piece suit with you girlfriend’s denim evening gown will never work – but with a casual look, the layering possibilities for denim are endless.

Ladies who love their Levi’s won’t want to miss the new Levi’s X Liberty collection. Available exclusively at Liberty, the range combines denim classics from the Levi’s archives with two ditsy floral Liberty prints.

Kate Middleton Spotted in Topshop Dress

Want to know the secret to spotting a sure fire style hit? Well, the rule is that if Kate Middleton has been seen wearing one, it’s pretty much guaranteed to sell out fast – so prepare to see polka dot dresses flying out of the shops

More than two years on since her Issa engagement dress launched a legion of copy Kates , the Duchess of Cambridge proved she’s still got what it takes to sell dresses by the crate load as she managed to magic up yet another style hit for a tour of the Harry Potter studios outside London.

Pictured larking around casting spells on William and Harry in this fun monochrome dress, we think it has to be our favourite of Kate’s pregnancy looks so far.

Harry Potter author, J.K. Rowling was also spotted wearing a polka dot dress at the event, but whilst her dress is a £2100 Nina Ricci number with ruffled hem, Kate’s simple skater dress comes in at a considerably more purse friendly £38 – and as per usual the Topshop dress sold out in a matter of a few short hours.

Worn with a Zara blazer, pearl earrings and her favourite Ursula Mascaro courts, the duchess’ polka dot dress skims over her burgeoning baby bump – even though rumour has it that she’s not actually a maternity style, but the version from Topshop’s tall range.

Here’s how to get Kate Middleton’s monochrome look on the high street – but if you can’t wait for Topshop to restock, we’ve waived our magic wands to conjure up two more polka dot dresses for you to choose from.

Style Inspiration: The Great Gatsby

White suits and flapper dresses at the ready – the wait is very almost over! After a series of set-backs and delays Baz Luhrmann’s glitzy adaptation of The Great Gatsby is finally set to hit cinema screens on 16th May here in the UK. In a collision of film and fashion the costumes have been designed by Miuccia Prada – and if her sketches are anything to go by, boy are we in for a visual treat! Feast your eyes on these showstoppers

Of course, all this means that stores are filling with Gatsby inspired fashion. For the boys this look can be described in just one word – dapper. The famous white three-piece suit worn with brogues and a boater hat has been meticulously recreated with a Great Gatsby range from US brand Brooks Brothers. Whilst on the British high street you need look no further than Hackett for a master-class in how any gentleman should dress. The aim is to get a Daisy Buchanan style reaction of: ‘I’ve never seen such, such beautiful shirts before.’

L-R: Carey Mulligan and Leonardo DiCaprio starring as Daisy and Gatsby, A look from Brooks Brothers’ Great Gatsby collection, A Look from Hackett’s S/S13 collection.

Speaking of Daisy, the Jazz Age depicted in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel is well and truly being bought back to life with the revival of dropped-waist dresses. Flapper style is all about fringing and beading on loose-fitting dresses, a boyish bobbed haircut and, needless to say, the right accessories. That means a long string of pearls, clutch bag and cloche hat for daytime or a feathered headband at night. Get the look with our Top 10 buys…

Get the Look: Harry Styles

What’s that you say? There’s nothing to buy in the shops unless you want to dress like a member of One Direction? Then it’s a good job we can’t get enough of the whole Harry Styles look.

Taylor Swift might have known Harry Styles was going to be trouble as soon as he walked into her life, but it would seem the lad’s got a look the ladies just can’t resist – and there are even apps around that let you style-up Mr Styles like he’s your very own fashion doll!

So think you’d like to boost your pulling power with a bit of Harry’s style now? Then let us point you in the right direction. All it takes is 10 wardrobe staples

Harry Styles

Onesies aside, Harry looks just as good in off duty denim as he does on stage in a sharp suit. A quick look through Harry’s greatest style hits and it’s easy to see the boy sure loves his skinny jeans – but the jury’s still out here at SGHQ. It can be a difficult look to pull off if you’re not a teenager anymore, but one way or another they’ll get you in the end! Stick to a dark wash and maybe ease yourself in with a narrow pair of straight legs and you’ll be hooked.

If you buy just one thing this season, make it a checked shirt. Whether you want to look like the sixth member of 1D or not, it’s a versatile style that can be dressed up or dressed down – depending on whether you layer yours with a blazer or a hoody. As for beanie hats, well they’re big news this season for girls and boys alike. Better get shopping

Spring Trends – The Year of the Snake

Leopard spots and zebra stripes step aside – snake print has slithered into the spotlight for S/S13. 2013 may be the Chinese year of the snake but a diverse selection of designers seem to have taken this as a style cue to take a walk on the wild side. Whether in patchwork at Preen or pastels at Erdem, you only have to have taken a quick glance at the catwalks to have seen that snake print is set to make a serious impact this season.

See, snake print doesn’t just come in 50 shades of grey these days! Soften a sexy look with pretty pastels or go all out and shop for hot pinks and canary yellows for an exotic twist on summer brights. We know what you’re thinking – head to toe animal print is all very well and good for the catwalk, but you can always opt to dip a toe in the water first and try adding snake print accessories to an outfit. Stella McCartney‘s Falabella bag has been reinvented in snake print for spring – need we say more?!

If all this talk is making you want to slip into something slinky right now, check out our Top 10 Snake Print Buys. With everything from Ted Baker swimwear to Moda in Pelle snake print shoes covered you’ll be all set for summer

The New Wedding Dress Code

Love must be in the air! How else can the year on year increase in the number of wedding invitations dropping through our letterboxes be explained away? At least a wedding provides the perfect excuse for guests to dress up. It’s not every day that a veiled fascinator isn’t over doing it a bit – unless you’re Paloma Faith, that is.

It should be fun choosing an outfit – but wedding guest etiquette can be a sartorial minefield. Is white just for the bride? Is black too depressing? Does this dress clash with the carefully planned colour theme? Don’t panic! We’ve planned 3 perfect wedding guest outfits to strike just the right balance between extravagant and elegant – and everything’s in the sale!

Look 1: Summer Bright’s

This season we’re seeing a riot of colour, so why not strike out and make a statement in bold royal blue, hot pink or even orange? Avoid mixing lots of bright colours. Instead pick one shade you love and co-ordinate like crazy for a streamlined look. If that’s still all a bit too much try adding neutrals to the mix. And if our usual British summers are anything to go by you’ll be glad of a smart dress coat to beat the cold!

Look 2: Vintage Glamour

With the release of The Great Gatsby set for May, prepare to start seeing a whole lot of 1920s styles taking centre stage. If you’ve been invited to an evening reception a glitzy beaded flapper dress is a great option. For daytime, a simple dropped waist shift dress provides a chic take on the trend. Navy is a smart alternative to black – and who says you can’t wear ballet flats? If you’ve got to trek across a field to a marquee you’ll be the only one smiling! A neutral pashmina will go with pretty much anything in your wardrobe and keep off the chill – then just grab a bright red clutch bag to add a pop of colour.

Look 3: Pretty Pastels

When it comes to ice cream shades it’s hard to resist them all – so we say give into temptation and mix ‘n’ match! Mouth-watering mint green, lemon yellow and Parma violet work a treat together. Whilst animal prints may not usually be associated with wedding wear, sugary pink snake print stays the right side of chic when used on romantic chiffon. If you don’t fancy wearing a hat or a huge feathered fascinator, a pearl hair clip or girly bow is a cute alternative.

One final thought; if you’ve been given a dress code or specific colour to wear, stick to it! There’s something about instructions that make us want to rebel, but it is the bride’s prerogative after all – and you never know, it might just happen to make choosing the perfect dress that bit easier. Come to think of it, catch the bouquet and then you can tell everyone what to wear next time around
